Cotton, polyester or a blend:
which material should you choose?

What each material offers, how it ages, and which one suits sport, the office or summer.

Cotton is pleasant and breathable, but it dries slowly and stretches out if it contains no elastane. Polyester, often called microfibre, dries quickly, keeps its shape and suits sport, but it retains odours more. The best everyday compromise is cotton with a small share of elastane. The material is always shown on the garment's label.

Which material for which moment?

Choose the material according to what the day demands, not according to the price.

At the office

Cotton with a little elastane: comfortable for eight hours and free of creases.

Suits: long days sitting down

For sport

Polyester or microfibre: moisture is wicked away and the garment keeps its shape.

Suits: exertion and sweating

In summer

Thin cotton or a light blend, ideally in a short cut.

Suits: the heat

When travelling

Synthetic materials: they dry overnight and take up little space.

Suits: light luggage

At home

Pure cotton, loose cut, with no demands on shape.

Suits: evening comfort

How to read the composition

Three details are enough to judge a garment.

  • The share of cotton tells you about comfort and breathability
  • A share of elastane of just a few percent is enough for the shape to return after washing
  • Polyester, polyamide and microfibre are synthetic materials: quick drying, shape retention
  • The care symbol shows the maximum temperature, not the ideal one

What people often ask

What is the best material for boxers?
For everyday wear, cotton with a small share of elastane: it is breathable and keeps its shape. For sport, polyester or microfibre is a better fit.
Cotton or polyester for sport?
Polyester. It wicks away moisture and dries quickly, whereas cotton stays wet for longer during exercise.
Is pure cotton a good choice?
Yes for comfort, provided you accept that it dries slowly and stretches a little over time if it contains no elastane.
What is elastane for in boxers?
It helps the shape return after washing and stops the boxers from stretching out. A few percent is enough.
How can you tell what material boxers are made of?
From the label sewn inside: it shows the composition in percent and the washing temperature.
