How to wash your boxers
so they last.

Temperature, drying, detergent: what keeps the shape and the waistband intact, material by material.

✔ By material✔ Step by step✔ Common mistakes

Most boxers can be washed at 30 or 40 degrees, inside out, with a mild detergent and without fabric softener. Pure cotton can often take higher temperatures, styles with elastane, modal or microfibre cannot. What wears boxers out most is heat: a tumble dryer on high heat slackens the waistband and distorts the fabric. The care label is always the reference.

Which temperature for which material?

General guidelines. The care label on the garment always takes priority.

MaterialWashingTumble dryerGood to know
Cotton40 degrees, sometimes 60 depending on the labelLow temperatureHeat makes cotton shrink
Cotton with elastane30 to 40 degreesPreferably air-dryHeat slackens the waistband and the fabric
Modal or viscose30 degrees, delicate programmeNoVery soft, loses its shape in heat
Microfibre30 to 40 degreesNoWithout fabric softener, otherwise it wicks moisture less well

Washing your boxers properly

Seven steps that considerably extend the life of a pair of boxers.

  • Read the label before the first wash, especially for styles with elastane or microfibre
  • Sort by colour and wash new dark items separately the first few times
  • Turn your boxers inside out to protect the colour and the seams
  • Use a laundry bag for stretchy styles, especially with jeans or zips
  • Dose the detergent as stated on the packaging and skip the fabric softener
  • Spin at a moderate speed rather than at maximum
  • Air-dry, not on the radiator, and do not iron the waistband

The most common mistakes

Almost all of them have the same result: the boxers lose their shape long before they are worn out.

Washing too hot

Beyond what the label allows, cotton shrinks and elastane tires.

Result: slack waistband, shrunken fabric

Using fabric softener

It leaves a film on the fibres. Elastane loses its tension, microfibre breathes less well.

Result: less support, less comfort

Tumble-drying on high heat

Heat makes the elastic waistband brittle and slack.

Result: waistband that gives way

Washing with towels

Towels shed fluff that clings to dark items.

Result: fluff on dark boxers

Too much detergent

Residues make the fabric stiffer and can irritate sensitive skin.

Result: stiff fabric

Leaving them damp

Boxers left wet in the drum pick up a smell that is hard to get rid of.

Result: lingering smell

Signs that a pair of boxers has had its day

Even well cared for, boxers wear out. These signs show that it is time to replace them.

  • The waistband no longer holds and rolls or slips
  • The fabric has become thin or see-through in places
  • The shape no longer returns after washing
  • Holes or open seams appear

Replace without thinking about it

What people often ask

At what temperature should you wash boxers?
Generally at 30 or 40 degrees. Pure cotton can often take higher temperatures, styles with elastane, modal or microfibre rather 30 degrees. The care label is what counts.
Can boxers go in the tumble dryer?
Only at a low temperature and if the label allows it. For styles with elastane, modal or microfibre, air-drying is better, because heat slackens the waistband.
Do you need fabric softener for underwear?
No. Fabric softener leaves a film on the fibres: elastane loses its tension and microfibre wicks moisture less well.
Should you wash new boxers before wearing them?
Yes, it is recommended. A first wash removes manufacturing residues and shows whether the colour runs.
Why does the waistband of boxers go slack?
Mainly because of heat, both when washing and drying, and fabric softener. Washing at 30 or 40 degrees and air-drying preserve it for longest.
