How many boxers
do you really need?
The answer depends on just one thing: how often you do your laundry.
For most men, 14 to 21 pairs of boxers are enough. The rule: twice the number of days between two washes, plus a reserve of seven. If you wash once a week, count on 21 pairs; every three days, 14 are enough. Below ten, the rotation becomes too tight and each pair wears out noticeably faster.

The number based on your laundry
The figure includes a reserve for travel and busy weeks.
| Laundry | Recommended number | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Every 2 to 3 days | 10 to 14 | The rotation is short, a small reserve is enough |
| Once a week | 18 to 21 | Seven days plus a week's reserve while washing |
| Every two weeks | 24 to 28 | Two full cycles must last without doing laundry |
| Frequent travel | +5 to 7 | One set stays in the suitcase permanently |
Why the number is almost always too low
Most men own between eight and twelve pairs of boxers, only half of which are actually worn. The others stay at the back of the drawer because they are stretched, faded or uncomfortable. The apparent stock is therefore larger than the usable stock.
What happens when there are too few
- Each pair goes through the machine much more often and wears out faster
- Laundry becomes urgent instead of planned
- Worn-out pairs stay in use for lack of a clean alternative
- An unexpected trip forces you to do a rushed wash
When to replace a pair of boxers
A pair of boxers should be replaced when the elastic no longer holds at the waist, when the fabric becomes see-through or rough, or when a seam gives way. The usual lifespan is one to two years for a pair worn regularly. This is not a question of hygiene but of fit: a stretched waistband no longer does its job.
Boxers, trunks or briefs: does the number change?
No. The number depends on your washing routine, not on the cut. What changes is the lifespan: close-fitting trunks put more strain on the waistband than loose boxers, and so wear out a little faster. If you mainly wear trunks, plan for two or three extra pairs.
What makes boxers last longer
- Wash at 30 or 40 degrees rather than 60: the elastic holds up much better
- Avoid the tumble dryer, it stretches the waistband the most
- Do not overload the drum, friction damages the fibres
- Rotate your stock instead of always taking the same pairs from the top of the pile
How many should you pack for a trip?
One pair per day, plus one spare. For a stay of more than a week, it is better to pack seven pairs and do a wash while you are away: beyond that, the space in the suitcase is no longer justified.
One way to take care of it
Renew without thinking about it
The problem is not buying boxers, it is remembering to.
Hardly anyone replaces their underwear at the right time, because nothing reminds them to. A subscription reverses the logic: a branded piece arrives every month, your stock renews itself and the oldest pairs naturally drop out of the rotation. At UNDY, the boxers subscription starts at CHF 13.90 per month, delivery within Switzerland and Liechtenstein is included, and you can cancel at any time.
